چکیده

1. Motivation and objectives The effect of free-stream turbulence (FST) on the onset of transition has only recently received detailed attention although FST is one of the important sources leading to by-pass transition. Such disturbances are of great interest in engineering, for instance for the prediction of transition on turbine blades, where the impingement of turbulence from the wake of the stator influences the boundary layers on the rotor blades. Another important aspect is the influence of FST on wind-tunnel experiments in general. It is desirable to reduce the FST-level in order to resemble free-flight conditions, but all wind-tunnels have some background disturbances with different characteristics, and knowledge about the ‘dangerous’ FSTparameters is of interest. Attempts have been made to establish empirical correlations between the free-stream turbulence and the transition Reynolds number. At FST levels (Tu) above 5-10%, transition occurs at the minimum Reynolds number where self-sustained boundary layer turbulence can exist, i.e. at Reθ ≈ 190 where Reθ denotes the Reynolds number based on momentum loss thickness (see Arnal, 1987, for a review). At lower levels of FST, however, the results are less clear.

Numerical Simulation of Separation Bubble on Elliptic Cylinders Using Three-equation k-? Turbulence Model

Occurrence of laminar separation bubbles on solid walls of an elliptic cylinder has been simulated using a recently developed transitional model for boundary layer flows. Computational method is based on the solution of the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the eddy-viscosity concept. Transitional model tries to simulate streamwise fluctuations, induced by freestream turbulen...

Helical modes in boundary layer transition

Observations are presented to show that in an adverse pressure gradient boundary layer, beneath free-stream turbulence, the interaction between Klebanoff streaks and naturally arising instability waves leads to helical disturbances which break down to form turbulent spots. This occurs under low to moderate levels, 1%–2%, of free-stream turbulence. At high levels of free-stream turbulence, conve...

Numerical studies of bypass transition in the Blasius boundary layer

Experimental findings show that transition from laminar to turbulent flow may occur also if the exponentially growing perturbations, eigensolutions to the linearised disturbance equations, are damped. An alternative non-modal growth mechanism has been recently identified, also based on the linear approximation. This consists of the transient growth of streamwise elongated disturbances, with reg...

Wave Evolution in Water Bodies using Turbulent MPS Simulation

Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) which is a meshless and full Lagrangian method is employed to simulate nonlinear hydrodynamic behavior in a wide variety of engineering application including free surface water waves. In the present study, a numerical particle-based model is developed by the authors using MPS method to simulate different wave problems in the coastal waters. In this model flui...

Numerical study of the primary instability in a separated boundary layer transition under elevated free-stream turbulence

Numerical studies of laminar-to-turbulent transition in a separation bubble subjected to two free-stream turbulence levels (FST) have been performed using Large-Eddy Simulation (LES). Separation of the laminar boundary layer occurs at a curvature change over a plate with a semi-circular leading edge at Re = 3450 based on the plate thickness and the uniform inlet velocity. A numerical trip is us...
